Mike Lee, Hugh Hewitt battle over how to run the Senate

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, on Thursday battled with radio host Hugh Hewitt go into a spat Thursday morning after Hewitt offered what he said would be a grown-up way to find compromise in Congress.

“Hugh, don’t tell me what the grown-up thing to do with my job is. I don’t tell you how to run your show, don’t tell me how to cast my votes,” Lee told Hewitt. He made that comment after Hewitt suggested that Congress vote on Sen. Jeff Flake’s idea to protect special counsel Robert Mueller, along with a related bill from Lee, in order to allow Flake to support President Trump’s judicial nominees.

Hewitt shot back that it was appropriate for him as a voter to tell senators what they think.

“The difference is I get to vote for the senators, and I am a citizen, so I do get to tell senators what the grown-up thing to do is,” Hewitt said. “And you can tell me how to run the radio show, that’s absolutely alright, but if you get all touchy, feely, and skittish about criticism, you’re in the wrong business.”

“Thank you very much, I really appreciate your insight,” Lee said.

Lee told Hewitt that he thinks Flake’s bill is unconstitutional, a point he made on the Senate floor this week. On Wednesday, when Flake requested unanimous consent to approve the bill, Lee blocked it.
