Protesters turned sour as they pelted tomatoes at French President Emmanuel Macron during his first public outing since Sunday’s election victory.
Macron was greeting a small crowd at a market in Cergy, a northwestern suburb of Paris, when a passerby chucked several tomatoes in his direction, none of which landed on the president.
His security detail quickly deployed an umbrella over the president as someone yelled “projectile” before his security whisked him away from the area.
IS MARINE LE PEN THE FRENCH DONALD TRUMP?
Macron was visiting a suburb over 18 miles outside of Paris, where nearly half of the French residents voted for his competitor, far-Left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, during the first round of voting in early April.
The French president visited the area in an effort to bridge the country’s deep political divisions.
“I am the president for each and every one of you,” Macron promised during his victory speech.
During his reelection campaign, Macron was repeatedly attacked for being removed from daily French life.

“I have come to say that I have heard the voices of each and everyone, and that I will continue to be engaged with the neighborhoods that are most in difficulty … every day,” Macron was heard saying prior to the incident, according to Politico.
