‘An outrage’: Jussie Smollett’s brother says he is in psych ward

Jussie Smollett’s brother said the Empire actor is being held in a psych ward at the Cook County Jail in Illinois as he begins his 150-day jail sentence.

Jocqui Smollett, Jussie’s brother, posted a video on Instagram saying he is concerned.

“What’s very concerning is that there was a note attached to his paperwork today, and on the front of his jail cell, saying that he’s at risk of self-harm,” Jocqui said. “I just want to make it clear that he is in no way, shape, or form at risk of self-harm. He wants to let folks know that he is very stable, he is very strong, he is very healthy and ready to take on the challenge that ultimately has been put up against him.”

Law enforcement placed Jussie in the psych ward because it is also the area where the jail houses high-profile inmates, according to TMZ.

“This is not right,” Jocqui added. “This is completely lack of justice. It’s angering. It’s an outrage … We want to make sure that folks understand that. Whatever insight the county jail made, what assumption they may be making, I don’t even know why they have him in a psych ward. We still have not gotten clear answers there.”

In addition to 150 days in jail, Cook County Judge James Linn ordered Jussie Smollett to pay $145,126 in restitution and fines.

Smollett was convicted in December on five counts of felony disorderly conduct and acquitted on a sixth for filing a false police report. The Empire actor claimed two men assaulted him, poured bleach onto him, and tied a noose around his neck.
