HEDWIG VILLAGE, Texas (AP) — A Houston-area police officer has returned fire and fatally shot a man who fled during a traffic stop.

Hedwig Village police Chief David Gott says the officer escaped injury Monday night when a bullet fired by the suspect tore through his pants leg.

Police say the officer tried to pull a vehicle over for making an illegal turn. The fleeing vehicle eventually stopped, a passenger hopped out and then the chase resumed.

Gott says the suspect’s vehicle eventually crashed into some bushes, the driver pulled a pistol and began firing. The officer returned fire and shot the man.

The suspect was transported to a hospital, where he later died. His name wasn’t immediately released. The passenger has not been caught.

The officer faces an administrative review of the fatal shooting.
