Skins keeping an eye on defensive line

The Redskins haven’t disguised their intentions the past few years: When it comes to improving their team, they prefer free agents.

But with the sixth overall pick in the draft, Washington has a chance to select an impact player. Another step in deciding who that player will be begins today with the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Here are three players they’ll likely check out closely for that sixth pick:

» Jamaal Anderson • DE • Arkansas:

He recorded 13.5 sacks and 20 tackles for a loss this past season and shows the ability to rush via strength or quickness. But there are some questions about his explosiveness. At 6-foot-5, 275 pounds, he wouldn’t have to add much weight.

» Gaines Adams • DE • CLEMSON: He had 12.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for a loss this past season. He’s not as fast as Anderson, nor is he as big. Teams will need to see if Adams can put on 10-20 pounds and still maintain his outstanding quickness. Also, teams have to decide if he’s best suited as an end or as a 3-4 linebacker. He’s not considered a top run stopper, either. The interview portion will also help decide his fate.

» Alan Branch • DT • MICHIGAN: At 6-foot-5 and 325 pounds, there’s no worries about his size or ability to handle the middle in a 4-3, paired next to Cornelius Griffin. Branch is not considered a playmaker, but the Redskins would want him to help others make plays. He’s better off than Michigan teammates, corner Leon Hall and end Lamarr Woodley, both of whom have seen their stock fall since the season ended.
