Former Virginia Del. Phil Hamilton, R-Newport News, was found guilty Wednesday of bribery and extortion for securing $500,000 in funding in exchange for a position at an Old Dominion University teaching center.
The former vice chairman of the House Appropriations Committee successfully helped secure $500,000 in state funds for the center in 2007, and was paid about $80,000 by the school over two years.
After the arrangement came to light, the university ended its relationship with Hamilton, who was defeated in 2009 after a 21-year career. He faces up to 30 years in prison, and sentencing has been scheduled for August 12.
Through his attorney, Hamilton vowed to appeal the federal jury’s decision, the Daily Press reported.
Hamilton has apologized, saying that it was “inappropriate” for him to seek a job while proposing the amendment.
