A GOP lawmaker said Thursday that she trusts those around President-elect Trump to ensure he doesn’t break any nepotism laws, and avoids a conflict of interest once he takes office in January.
Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told CNN she isn’t worried about the delay of a press conference scheduled for Thursday on how Trump plans to separate himself from the Trump Organization. She said she wasn’t sure of the exact reason why the press conference was delayed, but her assumption is that it’s a complicated matter and Trump needed more time to figure it out.
“They know they’re going to have to be more transparent, they’re going to have to do more to comply, they’re going to have to be above reproach,” Blackburn said. “They know this, so they’re working hard to make sure that they are.”
Trump tweeted Thursday morning the media was making a bigger deal out of his business dealings and the presidency than was warranted. He said it isn’t complicated to separate himself from his business, but didn’t offer an explanation as to why he chose not to do so as previously scheduled.
Blackburn said Trump and his family will figure out a way to make sure they follow the law.
“I trust those who are advising Mr. Trump in saying Donald Jr. and Eric are going to be in charge of the business and there’s going to be a way to build a wall and to make certain it complies with the laws and the standards and the ethics … and the expectations of the American people,” she said, “and they’re going to be able to do it.”
