Hillary Clinton said Sunday that Donald Trump can fire away with personal attacks against her and her husband, predicting the effort will backfire on Republicans.
“If he wants to engage in personal attacks from the past, that is his prerogative,” Clinton said. “You know, so be it.”
Responding to Clinton’s claim he is a sexist, Trump has cited former President Bill Clinton’s history of infidelity as well as sexual assault accusations against Clinton. Trump argues Hillary Clinton’s feminist credentials are harmed by her role attacking her husband’s accusers.
Asked on CBS’ “Face the Nation” if Trump claims are fair game, Clinton said Republicans have long treated the Clintons personal life “as fair game,” without success.
It “didn’t work before, won’t work again,” Clinton said. “It’s a dead end, blind alley for them, but let them go.”
Clinton said she is focusing on future policy, citing differences with Trump on the minimum wage, gun regulation and women’s pay.
“There are very clear distinctions,” she said. “He can say whatever he wants about me. Let the voters judge that,” Clinton added, growing animated. “But I am not going to let him or any of the other Republicans rip away the progress that we have. It has been too hard fought for. And I am going to stand up and make it clear there is a huge difference between us.”
