Calls to delete Facebook accounts trended on Twitter Wednesday morning after the platform’s independent Oversight Board decided to keep former President Donald Trump’s account banned on the website.

Thousands of Twitter posts with the hashtag #DeleteFacebook were used on Twitter on Wednesday. Some of the tweets were encouraging Facebook users to delete their accounts on the platform, alleging unfair censorship, while others were simply using the hashtag in a humorous fashion.

Lindsey Simmons, a former Democratic candidate for Congress in Missouri in 2020, said on Twitter that she “is happy with her decision to #deleteFacebook.” However, she still had a Facebook page for her political campaign on the platform as of Wednesday morning.

Many Twitter users who used the hashtag also shared a Mashable article titled, “How to permanently delete Facebook from your life,” which explained how to remove oneself from the platform, going further than just deactivating one’s account.

Some Twitter users complained that they want to delete their Facebook accounts but are unable to because they are “forced to use it for work,” as freelance journalist David Leavitt said in a post.
