This year, journalists have been asking practically every Republican candidate whether they would attend a gay wedding—and have received a wide variety of answers.
Meanwhile, according to a Boston Globe report, former president George W. Bush would not only attend a wedding—he would officiate it.
The former president apparently offered to officiate the same-sex wedding of family friends Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen in 2013. He was ultimately unable to do so, however, due to a “scheduling conflict.”
His father, George H.W. Bush, made the news that year for acting as a witness at their wedding.
George W. Bush’s brother Jeb recently told reporters in Puerto Rico that he would definitely attend the gay wedding of a loved one (“Claro que sí.”) At the same time, he maintains that he is personally a “stalwart supporter” of “traditional marriage.”
“Irrespective of the Supreme Court ruling — because they’re going to decide whatever they decide and I don’t know what they’re going to do — we need to be stalwart supporters of traditional marriage,” Bush told “The Brody File” earlier this month.
In the Globe report, Clement–who owns a general store frequented by Bush–describes Jeb as “not somebody who comes in and makes a splash.”
“This is Jeb: He’ll come in, get a coffee and a newspaper and a small breakfast. And then he’ll sit in the corner and read the paper.”
