Nearly 50,000 drivers in the Montclair and Dale City areas of Prince William County will see less traffic now that the Benita Fitzgerald Drive extension has been completed.

The 1,000-plus-foot, four-lane extension opens today connecting Dale Boulevard to Cardinal Drive and creating a shorter and less clogged commute, said the road’s project manager, Mehrdad Naderi.

Drivers that had been forced to backtrack on Cardinal Drive to Minnieville Road to get to Dale Boulevard and access Interstate 95 — or drive beyond I-95 on Cardinal Drive to Route 1 get on the interstate — can now shoot up Benita Fitzgerald Drive, Naderi said.

“It will take traffic off of Minnieville Road, Darbydale Road and … funnel people off Cardinal Drive,” said Liz Bahrns, a county spokeswoman.

“It is going to mean the people who live on Cardinal Drive will have quick access to Potomac Mills, to the business districts in the central part of the county,” said John Jenkins, Neabsco supervisor.

The $4 million, eight-month project included $250,000 of contributions from developers, including donated land.
