CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — University of Illinois researchers will be able to look for ozone-resistant corn thanks to a $5.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

Researchers will screen different lines of corn. They say ozone can cause major damage and yield reductions in crops. Its cost for corn is estimated at $700 million a year across the world.

There’s also a public-service portion of the grant. The News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/UGDINj) that researchers also will use part of the money to expand an after-school plant biology program at Urbana Middle School. They’ll also set up a summer science day camp at the Champaign-Urbana university for middle school and high school girls.
