WATCH: Russian Embassy spotlight operator duels with pro-Ukraine protesters

Protesters lit up the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., in blue and yellow on Wednesday despite desperate attempts by an embassy spotlight operator to drown out the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The scene turned into a “cat and mouse” game between the pro-Ukrainian protesters and the Russian Embassy. Ultimately, attempts to keep the image of the Ukrainian flag from being displayed on the building’s walls failed as the embassy spotlight operator was outlasted late in the evening.

“We lit up the Russian embassy in blue and yellow but the Checkists inside had a surprise for us. They are using their own spotlights to wash us out,” tweeted Benjamin Wittes, one of the organizers of the luminous protest.

The event was not publicized beforehand in order to surprise staff inside the Russian Embassy and prevent any attempts to block the blue and yellow lights from reaching the building, Wittes said in a Twitter livestream.

The protesters were not expecting the countermeasure from inside the embassy grounds, but eventually, the “beleaguered” spotlight operator appeared to have “collapsed,” according to Wittes, and the Ukrainian flag projection was able to dance on the side of the building undisturbed.

The Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., sits on Boris Nemtsov Plaza, named after a Russian dissident who was shot to death in 2015 near the Kremlin in Moscow. He is believed to have been killed by Russian government agents at the direction of President Vladimir Putin.
