A female driver was seriously injured when she was struck by a manhole cover that flew through the front windshield of her Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle, Montgomery County firefighters said. The incident happened around noon Monday on Georgia Avenue near the intersection of Plyers Mill Road. The manhole struck the woman in the face and she was taken to Suburban Hospital and was expected to survive, said Capt. Oscar Garcia. About an hour later, fire and rescue crews responded to a report of a strange odor in the area and ordered the evacuation of about 20 people. Another 75 people were told to stay inside. One person who smelled the odor started to fell sick and was evaluated. Traffic was shut down in both directions on Georgia Avenue. Hazardous material crews were working with Pepco and Washington Gas to identify the odor late Monday. — Scott McCabe
