Wheaton carjacking appears unrelated to 3 area kidnappings

An armed carjacking was reported overnight at a Wheaton-area Burger King, but police say the case appears to be unrelated to three recent kidnappings reported nearby.

Montgomery County police said the carjacking happened at the fast food restaurant located at 12265 Veirs Mill Road at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, when a 24-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman reported that two men — one armed with a handgun — demanded their cell phones, wallet and vehicle.

The two suspects took off in the victims’ vehicle, which has not been located. The car is a white 2004 four-door Honda Civic with the Maryland license plate 13801CE.

Authorities don’t think the case is connected to three kidnappings reported in the Wheaton area over the past week, said Officer Rebecca Innocenti, a police spokeswoman. In those cases, older men were robbed and kidnapped in parking lots by a man wielding a box cutter.

Police believe the same suspect is responsible for those three attacks, which happened at the Westfield Wheaton mall and the Giant grocery store. Both of those sites are about two miles away from the Burger King.

One suspect in the Burger King carjacking is described as a black man who was 20 to 24 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and wearing a black skull cap, a black scarf, a black jacket and black cargo pants. He was carrying a black handgun. The other suspect is described as a black man who was 20 to 24 years old, 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall and had a thin build. He was wearing a black and white checkered scarf, a black hat and black jeans.

Anyone with information about any of the cases is asked to call police at 240-773-5100 or Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477) or 240-773-8477.
