Who: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
What: Is spending $103.7 million in federal dollars on a beach-fill program. According to Howard Marlowe, a prominent coastal lobbyist, New Jersey is receiving $20.7 million, Florida is getting $14.3 million, and Delaware is getting $1.3 million. Also, a project on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania is getting a piddling $945,000 of your hard-earned cash.
Why it’s an outrage: Building too close to the ocean is a bad idea on a number of levels, but subsidizing wealthy beach property owners with spa sand treatment is far worse.
