Kraft Mac & Cheese is going on a diet.
Kraft Foods Group will scrap the artificial preservatives and synthetic colors from its boxed macaroni and cheese by next year, according to the Associated Press.
Come January 2016, the cheesy delight will instead be colored with paprika, annatto and turmeric. The company insists that there will be no change in the taste of its famed product.
The move comes just months after first lady Michelle Obama insulted boxed macaroni and cheese during an interview with Cooking Light. The Kraft product comes with a packet of powdered cheese that becomes cheese sauce if directions are followed properly.
“Cheese dust is not food,” Michelle Obama declared.
Coincidence?
In addition to the first lady’s expression of disapproval, there was also a Change.org petition launched in 2013 that demanded Kraft remove the dyes from its macaroni and cheese. The petition was backed by over 365,000 people.
While the product Kraft Mac & Cheese Boxed Shapes currently for sale already contains no artificial flavors, the company’s other varieties won’t shed the fake stuff until next year.
“We weren’t ready to change the product until we were confident that Kraft Macaroni & Cheese tastes like Kraft Macaroni & Cheese,” Kraft said in a statement.
