Democrats plan Charlie Hebdo pencil tribute during State of the Union

In a show of support for the victims of the recent Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris, a group of House Democrats will hold up yellow pencils during President Obama’s State of the Union address before Congress Tuesday evening.

The tribute, spearheaded by Rep. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin, will take place during the applause break immediately after the president mentions the attack.

The tribute is mean to “honor those who lost their lives in the pursuit of open ideas and free expression,” Moore’s office said.

Two men attacked the satirical magazine’s office earlier this month, killing 12 members of the staff.

In the face of the terrorist attack, the pencil has become an international symbol in support of free speech.

“Rather than divide and intimidate us, these brazen and barbaric attacks have united the international community and prompted a global response in defense of the freedom of expression,” said Moore spokesman Eric Harris. “The congresswoman believes that this is unique opportunity to join our global partners in showing our collective support and solidarity.”

At least 10 House Democrats have agreed to join Moore in the pencil tribute, with more expected to join in. Harris said Republicans have been invited to participate but none so far have agreed to do so.
