Secret Service arrests fence-climber near White House

An individual was arrested in Washington after climbing over fencing near the White House.

A spokeswoman with the Secret Service said in a statement to the Washington Examiner that the incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on Tuesday when an individual “climbed over fencing near the north court of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.” The Eisenhower Executive Office Building is located directly to the west of the White House and holds most of the White House staff.

The spokeswoman said the individual, who has not been publicly identified, was “immediately apprehended” by Secret Service Uniformed Division officers, placed under arrest, and transported to the district’s Metropolitan Police Department for processing.

“No Secret Service protectees were in the area at the time, and White House operations remained unaffected,” she added.

The White House has been the target of climbers in the past. In 2017, a fence-jumper got onto the White House grounds and managed to walk around for more than 15 minutes, making it all the way to the East Wing’s back door before his arrest. The White House announced in 2019 it was raising the height of the fence surrounding the building to deter would-be climbers.
