Death of Mr. Peanut overshadows first day of impeachment arguments on Twitter

Planters announced the death of its Mr. Peanut mascot and the news went to the top of Twitter trends on the first day of impeachment arguments against President Trump.

During the second day of the impeachment trial in the Senate, “Mr. Peanut” and “#RIPeanut” were the top two trending topics on Twitter. House Democrats offered their initial arguments on Wednesday.

Some found the trend humorous, while others argued the public were not taking impeachment seriously enough.

Planters got the trend rolling Wednesday morning with a tweet announcing the mascot’s death after they released a 30-second Super Bowl commercial depicting the fictional legume’s demise. “It is with heavy hearts that we confirm that Mr. Peanut has died at 104. In the ultimate selfless act, he sacrificed himself to save his friends when they needed him most. Please pay your respects with #RIPeanut,” the company said in a statement.
