Watch: Emily Blunt apologizes for comments about GOP debate

Actress Emily Blunt stirred up some controversy earlier this week with some derogatory comments about the GOP presidential field. Today, she felt bad enough to apologize for her remarks.

In a Monday interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting her new film “Sicario,” Blunt joked about why watching the first Republican debate made her less excited about a recent accomplishment.

“I became an American citizen recently,” said the native Brit. “And that night, we watched the Republican debate. And I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'”

On Thursday, she apologized for her harsh words during an interview with Savannah Guthrie on the “Today” show.

“It was so not the intention to hurt anybody or cause any offense,” Blunt said. “So I really apologize to those that I caused offense. It was just an offhand joke. I think I’ll probably leave the political jokes to late night or something.”

She went on discuss how important becoming an American citizen was for her and her family.

“It’s really meaningful,” she said. “My two favorite people in the world are American, my husband and my daughter. And it was kind of a special day. It was great.”

Guthrie joked that since Blunt took the citizenship test, she “probably [has] a better knowledge of our country than a lot of middle schoolers right now.”

Blunt laughed it off, saying, “”There was a lot I learned about the Constitution and American history. I think I know more about American history now than British history, which is interesting.”
