Michael Cohen heads to prison for three-year sentence

President Trump’s former longtime lawyer begins his three-year prison sentence Monday.

Michael Cohen, 53, will be an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution, Otisville, located about 70 miles outside of New York City.

He pleaded guilty in December to a handful of crimes, including bank fraud, lying to Congress, and illegal campaign contributions.

Cohen admitted in federal court that he had made hush money payments to women accusing Trump of having extramarital affairs “at the direction” of the then-presidential candidate.

Since turning on his former boss, Cohen has faced the wrath of Trump via Twitter. In December, Trump called his former lawyer a “rat” for cooperating with investigators. He has also accused Cohen of lying to investigators to shorten his prison sentence.

Cohen was originally set to report to prison on March 6, but a federal judge granted him a 60-day reprieve to allow him time to testify to Congress and recover from shoulder surgery.

The president’s former fixer testified in recent months to the Senate Intelligence Committee, House Intelligence Committee, and House Oversight Committee, and met with federal prosecutors from both the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan and the office of special counsel Robert Mueller.

He offered new information to Democrats in early April in an effort to delay his sentence. His lawyers sent a letter to members of the House Oversight and Intelligence committees informing them of the discovery of a hard drive with 14 million files from his computers and phones from the past 10 years that they said could be of interest in their inquiries into the president.

“I hope that when I rejoin my family and friends that the country will be in a place without xenophobia, injustice and lies at the helm of our country,” Cohen told reporters Monday before heading to prison. “There still remains much to be told and I look forward to the day that I can share the truth.”
