Pittsburgh police are preparing for the possibility of city-wide riots in the event that President Trump fires special counsel Robert Mueller.
A department-wide memo sent from Commander Victor Joseph instructed all Major Crimes detectives to start wearing full uniform and riot gear until “further notice” as they anticipate protests if Mueller is terminated.
“There is a belief that President Trump will soon move to fire Special Prosecutor Mueller. This would result in a large protest within 24 hours of the firing,” the email read, according to CBS Pittsburgh.
Joseph explained that they have credible reason to believe a protest would breakout on short notice if Trump goes through with the controversial move.
Earlier this month White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to to say whether he plans to fire the special counsel but confirmed that he believes its within his power.
Mueller is leading the federal investigation looking into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Trump has long called the investigation a “witch hunt.”
