Crime History: ‘Nicest Boy in Wolcott’ kills family

On this day, Nov. 28, in 1958, mild-mannered University of Kansas student Lowell Lee Andrews shot and killed his parents and older sister during a Thanksgiving visit to his hometown of Wolcott, Kan.

Andrews, 18, who played bassoon in the college band, was described by a neighbor as “the nicest boy in Wolcott.”

It was a cold and snowy day. Andrews shaved and put on suit. He retrieved a .22-caliber rifle and a revolver, then went into the living room and shot his sister between the eyes. He then fired multiple shot at his parents, hitting his father 17 times.

He eventually confessed to the killings but said he didn’t know why he did it.

He was executed by hanging at age 22.
