Small company, big recognition

A Harford County Web firm won three first-place design awards last month from the Maryland and D.C. Credit Union Association, and is working on several projects for large local clients.

Sequel Design Associates, a privately owned print, Web and applications development company based in Forest Hill, helped earn Trailblazer awards for Perry Point Credit Union and the employee federal credit unions for Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties, Vice President for Development Patrik Fleming said.

Fleming credited the 11-employee company?s small size and suburban location for its ability to challenge larger and more expensive firms in Baltimore and Washington while serving clients across the region.

“It enables us to offer competitive rates because we?re not one of the big firms in D.C.,” he said. “Our overhead is lower, and Harford County?s booming.”

Sequel recently created marketing and fundraising materials for clients such as the Maryland Science Center, Loyola Blakefield and the Harford Day School. In addition to Web site design and programming, the firm has also written applications to collect survey responses for the Architect of the U.S. Capitol, administer Continuing Education tests for medical professionals, and track payments between hospitals and insurance companies.

The firm is also working on a complete redesign of Harford Community College?s Web site, which will include a virtual tour of the Bel Air campus, Fleming said. The new site is expected to be online by Aug. 1, just as the company takes over hosting duties for Upper Chesapeake Health Systems? Web sites.

Sequel was founded as a print and design shop in 1994 with $15,000 from husband-and-wife team Charles and Kathleen Minacapelli. They are now the president and vice president of the company, respectively.

The company began designing and programming Web sites during the dot-com boom, and rode out the subsequent decline by clinging to their client list and leaning on their print division, Kathleen Minacapelli said.

“It?s not like we hadn?t been hit here and there,” Charles Minacapelli said, but Sequel stuck to serving its clients well, and that work helped carry them through.

In the near future, Sequel will be focusing on marketing efforts, helping its clients make a good first impression on new businesses and customers expected to come with the expansion of Aberdeen Proving Ground.
