Caps trim training camp roster to 42

The Capitals made another cut on Thursday to trim the training camp roster down to 42, not including injured defenseman Tom Poti (groin). There are still five preseason games remaining, including Friday night’s contest at Chicago, and coach Bruce Boudreau has said he wants to get his top players more time together as the team works new faces into the lineup.

Goalie Philipp Grubauer was assigned to AHL Hershey. The 20-year-old German could return to his junior club, the Kingston Frontenacs, but that seems unlikely at this point. After Thursday’s 4-3 preseason loss in Columbus, goalie Brandon Anderson was returned to his junior club, Lethbridge. Washington is now down to four goalies – Braden Holtby, Michal Neuvirth, Tomas Vokoun and Dany Sabourin.

Regular NHL waivers do not formally begin until this weekend so three of Wednesday’s cuts – defenseman Zach Miskovic and forwards Kyle Greentree and Francois Bouchard – won’t know until Saturday if they’ve cleared.
