Kellyanne Conway responded to Taylor Swift by singing the pop star’s lyrics after she criticized President Trump for not responding to a petition in support of the Equality Act.
“I actually like the new Taylor Swift song that is called You Need to Calm Down,” the 52-year-old counselor to the president said Tuesday on Fox News before singing some of the lyrics of Swift’s song. “I can sing it for you. You know where she says, ‘If you say it on the street that’s a knock out, if you put it in a tweet, that’s a cop-out.’ I love that. That’s basically Washington in a nutshell. But I think that when Hollywood and singers and all go political, it sounds in the moment like it is very popular. And we’ve seen so many times where it backfires and blows up.”
Conway added that President Trump does not support the Equality Act because the bill contains legislative “poison pills.”
Swift, 29, urged the White House during a speech at the VMA Awards on Monday to respond to a petition supporting the Equality Act.
“We deserve equal rights under the law. I want to thank everyone who signed that petition because it has half-a-million signatures, which is five times the amount it would need to warrant a response from the White House,” the pop star said while accepting the Video of the Year award as voted by fans.
The end of the music video urged viewers to “show our pride” by signing a petition “for Senate support of the Equality Act.”
