Hopkins? grad Unseld went straight to the NBA

There he was, standing alongside his father in an NBA lockerroom at the tender age of five. Time has elapsed, but the memory is almost as tangible as the steam coming from a hot shower, and lingers in the air just the same.

“The funny thing was that at that age, I actually remember going to the games, watching him take his usual pre-game nap and seeing such a great family atmosphere in the locker room,” Wes Unseld Jr., 30, said of his experience with his father and former Washington Bullet great Wes Unseld.

In his ninth year as a member of the Washington Wizards? organization, Unseld returned this season as the Wizards? advance pro scout and added the assistant coach title.

As a Wizards? scout, the Loyola High and Johns Hopkins graduate covers between 20-25 games a month during the season.

“It?s a very detailed and extensive plan to learn the tendencies of another team on a daily basis,” said Unseld Jr., who grew up in Catonsville. “Before every game I try to have a solid grasp on the play an opposing team is about to run, so I can relay this information to Eddie, [Wizards head coach Eddie Jordan] and he can then translate this message to the players.”
