The Canadian government will announce plans Tuesday to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by Dec. 31.
Newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that Canadian leaders will stand by a pledge made earlier this year to accept refugees despite recent pushback from citizens.
“Everyone agrees that Canada must do more and must welcome 25,000 refugees,” Trudeau told reporters.
The prime minister said his government will use robust screening procedures in order to meet the approaching deadline while maintaining national security protocols.
Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper had declined to accept additional Syrian refugees.
In the U.S., 34 state governors have voiced opposition to taking in 10,000 Syrian refugees due to concerns that terrorists could embed themselves in the refugee population and enter America.
