Polls: Arizona, Florida not smitten with Trump’s wall

Pluralities in Arizona and the battleground state of Florida believe Donald Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border is “a waste of money,” according to the results of a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released Sunday.

Forty-seven percent of Arizona residents said rejected the idea of the barrier when asked if the wall is “an effective barrier or a waste of money.” Thirty-four percent said “effective barrier,” while the rest didn’t pick either one.

Republicans in the border state were a bit more generous, with 57 percent picking “effective barrier,” while 21 percent said the wall would be a “waste of money.”

Arizona’s seeming rejection of Trump’s signature proposal to block illegal immigrants from entering the U.S. could spell trouble for Trump. According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, his rival Hillary Clinton holds a 1.5 percentage point advantage in the state that has only voted for a Democratic presidential candidate once since 1952.

Meanwhile in Florida, 41 percent of voters called Trump’s wall a “waste of money”, while 36 percent picked “effective barrier.”

The poll of 2,610 people, which ran from Oct. 5 to 19, was conducted online in English and Spanish. Both polls have a margin of error of 2 percentage points for all respondents and 3 percentage points for likely voters.
