A Republican congressman who fell in a huge midterm upset started a new job this week: as dean of the business school at Liberty University.
The Virginia university announced Wednesday that it hired former Rep. Dave Brat to head its business school, effective immediately.
Brat was first elected to the House in 2014 after he upset then-former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the Republican primary. Despite an endorsement from President Trump in a district Trump won in 2016 by 7 points, Brat was defeated last year by Democrat Abigail Spanberger.
Spanberger, a former CIA operative, was sworn in Thursday during the first session of the 116th Congress.
Brat, who holds a Ph.D. in economics from American University, was previously a professor at Randolph-Macon College. Before that, he worked for accounting firm Arthur Anderson and for the World Bank.
Liberty, a private Christian school, was founded in 1971 by televangelist Jerry Falwell. It is a noted stop for Republicans on the campaign trail.
