Rick Perry’s campaign has just issued a press release quoting him in a speech in South Carolina. He takes on the White House’s repeated insistence that food stamps represent a vital form of economic stimulus:
“Most Americans do not yearn to be dependent on government subsidies, they want economic freedom, and economic freedom comes from work and wages, not welfare,” Gov. Perry said. “The central issue of this election is an Administration that believes Washington must be our caretaker, and a people who want Washington to only take care of their constitutional responsibilities.”
This sounds like the typical “personal responsibility” sort of thing that politicians always say. That said, it also has the virtue of being true.

It is important to remember the enormous difference between tiding people over in a rough time and improving the economy. Food stamps accomplish the former, and not the latter.
