The Concorde District sidelines will have a different look on Friday nights next fall.
Centreville coach Mike Skinner and Herndon coach Tom Meier have both announced they will resign at the end of the season.
“I was 99-percent sure at the end of last season that this would be it for me,” said Skinner, 49. “There really isn’t an offseason anymore. Two weeks after the season ends the weight room starts. And you have to put in all that time to stay competitive in this district.”
Meier, 47, has two sons who play football for Broad Run in Loudoun County; Tommy, a junior, and Johnny, a freshman. A Langhorne, Pa. native, Meier was also the head coach at George Mason in Falls Church for two years. He finished his career at Herndon with a 114-81 record in a district where five rival schools have combined for six Virginia Group AAA Division 6 state titles since 1996.
“I still had as much fun coaching this season as I’ve ever had,” Meier said. “I still love it. But I’d like to be there to see my sons play together next year. That’s not something I can do right now.”
Skinner began his coaching career at Groveton as an assistant and also served in that capacity at Marshall. He was the head coach at Marshall in 1988 and 1989 and served four years as a Centreville assistant before taking over in 1999. He is 66-23 with the Wildcats, including five playoff appearances, two Northern Region titles and a state championship in 2000.
