Much of what passes for principled opposition these days has nothing to do with principle and everything to do with party affiliation.
Take, for example, members of the anti-President Trump “resistance” who dismiss and even criticize the White House’s role in the establishment of diplomatic ties between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
Rather than give the Trump administration its due for brokering the historic deal, some of these so-called resisters insist that the normalization of relations between Israel and the Arab nations is no big deal. Others insist it is dangerous. Some even tried to take away from the White House’s triumph this week by focusing on the administration’s mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic. Whatever line of attack works.
“Good for him for having a distraction on a day when the numbers of people who are affected and the numbers of people who are dying from [the coronavirus] only increases,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on the same day that the White House held an event to formalize the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Middle East countries.
“UAE & Bahrain recognizing Israel is good news, but don’t lose sight of the bigger picture,” said Washington Post columnist Max Boot, linking back to his Aug. 15 column, which asserts, “Trump will leave the Middle East an even bigger mess than he found it. That is nothing to boast of.”
Over at the left-wing Crooked Media, the media brainchild of Obama bros Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor, Vietor hosted noted liar and former Obama White House staffer Ben Rhodes on Wednesday to “call BS” on the “so-called ‘peace’ deals between the UAE and Isreal and Bahrain.”
At Vox, famously dense person Aaron Rupar mused in an astonishing display of ignorance, “Reality check: Israel has never gone to war with UAE or Bahrain.”
“What am I missing? Was there conflict between Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain?” asked former CNN correspondent Jacki Schechner.
Later, after her ignorance became the plaything of so many fascinated bystanders, she declared in defiance, “Fascinating how so many Trump supporters have come out of the woodwork to insult me, but not a single one has bothered to explain the significance of announcing peace btwn nations already at peace and hosting an in-person event during a pandemic that’s killed almost 200k.”
“Also,” she added for good measure, “cable news reporters keep saying the deal is historic, but we haven’t seen any details. And frankly, I trust nothing Trump claims without actual proof.”
Speaking of CNN, its coverage Tuesday of a White House event showcasing the pact between Israel, Bahrain, and the UAE, was, for lack of a better word, shameful.
Rather than focus on what is, by all objective standards, a historic and headline-making news event, CNN staffers obsessed instead over coronavirus precaution violations at the White House.
“Today’s ceremony showcased the president’s continued defiance of the very coronavirus guidelines his White House recommends,” said CNN’s Jake Tapper at the top of his evening program. “In the midst of this brutal pandemic, holding the event with hundreds of people gathered, packed in pretty tight, hundreds not wearing masks, some top administration officials among them.”
As he spoke, the on-air headline flashed, “Trump celebrates foreign policy win with packed [White House] crowd.”
“The signing of the accords that Trump hailed as ‘historic’ also drew attention because hundreds of guests were packed on the South Lawn with little social distancing and optional masks,” added CNN’s Kaitlan Collins in a prerecorded narration.
Yes, because the big takeaway here is that some of the event’s attendees did not wear masks. CNN’s coverage practically submits itself to the Pulitzer committee.
If peace in the Middle East is not good enough for these people, nothing will be. The Trump administration could announce tomorrow that a cure for cancer has been found, and some “resister” at CNN, the Washington Post, or elsewhere will complain there is still no vaccine for COVID-19.
