Americans want Republicans and Democrats to work together, poll finds

Americans want both political parties to scrap their extreme Washington antics and work toward more compromise.

According to a YouGov/Huffington Post poll released Tuesday, overwhelming shares of American voters want Democrats to work across the aisle with Republicans — and vice versa — so that government can actually make some progress.

Specifically, 56 percent of those polled insisted that members of the Republican party should compromise with their Democratic counterparts as opposed to sticking to their stances on issues and avoiding agreement. Sixty-eight percent urged the Democrats to do the same with the GOP.

It comes as little surprise that Americans are concerned about and frustrated with Washington’s lack of productivity. After all, a Gallup analysis found that poor government leadership was the top issue named by Americans in 2014.

When it comes to the most extreme political party, Americans slightly favor Republicans for the title, according to the poll released Tuesday.

Whereas 29 percent believe Democrats to be the most extreme of the bunch, 37 percent say the GOP exhibits more crazy.

Millennial Americans are the most likely to label Republicans more extreme, with 46 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds saying such and only 18 percent rating Democrats at a higher extreme degree.

However, a decent 22 percent of voters agree that both parties are equally extreme.

The poll was conducted between April 25 and 27 and involved 1,000 U.S. adults.
