1. Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan missed practice, as expected, because of the bone bruise in his right knee. Kerrigan said the timetable is still for him to sit out a couple days. “But I feel a lot better than yesterday so I’m hoping it will continue to progress.” He injured his leg during practice Friday. “I took a little knee to the leg and took an awkward step and bruised the leg a little bit.”
2. Free agent signees Santana Moss, Josh Wilson, Chris Chester, Kellen Clemens, Barry Cofield, Donte Stallworth and Stephen Bowen all attended practice this morning. They still can’t work out at the facility, so they left to get a workout in elsewhere in the area. Nor can any member of the Redskins staff train with them. But they are able to get treatment if necessary and sit in meetings. The Miami Herald reported that there’s a movement to get the date that free agents can report moved from Aug. 4 to Aug. 2.
3. Mike Shanahan said he moved Mike Sellers from fullback to tight end/H-back because, “He’s 270 pounds, has good hands so to play both positions gives us more flexibility.” Shanahan said Sellers played well at fullback last year, but wants to see what Darrel Young and Keiland Williams can do. Williams is splitting his time at fullback and running back. I’m curious to see how this plays out with Sellers. He’s still a good special teamer and that helps him. Sellers didn’t sound too thrilled with the move. “We’ll see how they do at fullback,” he told reporters, “if they can handle the responsibility. It’s a big one. We’ll see.”
4. The Redskins will bring in another quarterback within the next three days, Shanahan said. Do not take this as an indictment on the quarterback situation; besides, it’ll likely be an undrafted free agent because they could come in right away. This is to save the wear and tear on John Beck and Ben Chappell, the only quarterbacks in camp. Often times there are five quarterbacks early in camp, which enables teams to give the receivers a lot of reps. You can’t do that with two guys. Arms do get tired.
5. In addition to Kerrigan, three others missed practice: LaRon Landry (Achilles), Robert Henson (knee) and Kareem Moore (knee). Shanahan stressed again that Landry’s situation is about “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This situation is partly a result of the team being unable to monitor the rehab in the offseason.
6. The Redskins likely won’t do any full pad work this week, Shanahan said. He wants to make sure everyone is in football shape before they proceed and is almost treating the first week as if it’s an organized team activity. He’s also limiting the one-on-one work with receivers and defensive backs, hoping to prevent pulled hamstrings.
7. The Redskins officially released veteran guard Mike Williams, who missed last season because of blood clots. Williams is still unable to play football.
