Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote their latest book, The Book of Gutsy Women, and Colbert opened the show by asking the former secretary of state about President Trump and the impeachment inquiry involving Ukraine.
“Is it time to, dare I say, ‘lock him up?'” Colbert quipped Monday night, in reference to the “lock her up” chants about Clinton from crowds at Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign rallies.
“What do you make of it?” Colbert added before the crowd began chanting “lock him up” repeatedly as Clinton laughed.
“I’m sorry, stop it. I created a monster. I apologize,” Colbert said before letting Clinton answer.
“So, here we are, and we have started an impeachment inquiry, which will look at the evidence,” she said.
She later continued, “We’ve known for a long time that he was a corrupt businessman who cheated people, and we’ve known that he and his campaign asked for aid from Russia. We’ve known that. But to see him in the office of the president putting his own personal and political interests ahead of the national security of our country just pierced through whatever confusion or denial people had.”
Colbert agreed that impeachment was likely necessary to hold the president accountable before the next election.
The Clintons have been going on a national press tour to promote their new book, including an interview with People Magazine, a nationally televised interview with CBS Sunday Morning, and a planned stop on ABC’s The View slated for Wednesday.
Clinton first told People Magazine last week that she supported the impeachment inquiry into Trump. In her interview with CBS, she lamented her 2016 loss in the presidential election, saying, “To me, it was like applying for a job and getting 66 million letters of recommendation.”
The two-time presidential candidate lost decisively to Trump in the electoral college 304-227 but gained almost 3 million more votes than the president, a fact she is quick to remind people about.
