A U.S. Navy C-2A Greyhound aircraft carrying 11 passengers and crew crashed into the Philippine Sea on Friday, the Navy said.
Eight people were recovered and are in good condition, the Navy said, and search-and-rescue operations are underway to find the remaining three. Helicopters carrier those eight people to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan for medical evaluation.
The Navy said the plane crashed around 2:45 p.m. local time and the eight were recovered less than 45 minutes later.
The C-2A, which the Navy refers to as a carrier onboard delivery plane, or COD, had taken off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, and was on its way to the Reagan when it crashed. The plane is typically used to bring cargo, mail, distinguished visitors and media onto aircraft carriers.
Ships and aircraft from the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self Defense Force are on the scene searching for the remaining three. From the U.S. side, they include the destroyer USS Stethem, MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, P-8 Poseidon and P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft. Japanese assets include the helicopter carrier Kaga and destroyer Shimakaze.
“Our entire focus is on finding all of our sailors,” said Rear Adm. Marc Dalton, commander of Task Force 70. “U.S. and Japanese ships and aircraft are searching the area of the crash, and we will be relentless in our efforts.”
The Greyhound was assigned to Detachment 5, Fleet Logistics Squadron 30, known as the “Providers,” deployed to Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan.
President Trump and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer have tweeted out that those involved are in their thoughts.
