Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon will join Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore on the campaign trail next week ahead of the Dec. 12 special election.
“I look forward to standing with Judge Moore and all of the Alabama deplorables in the fight to elect him to the United States Senate and send shockwaves to the political and media elites,” Bannon told CNN.
Bannon, who is back at Breitbart News, will appear alongside Moore at a rally in Fairhope, Ala., on Dec. 5, per the network.
Bannon has been battling a self-declared “war” against the GOP establishment since leaving the Trump administration by backing populist candidates instead of institutional favorites.
During the primary, Bannon stumped for Moore, a controversial former judge, rather that President Trump’s pick, incumbent Sen. Luther Strange.
Many Republicans have refused to support Moore, while others have pulled earlier endorsements, in the wake of several women accusing Moore of inappropriate sexual behavior toward them when they were in their teens and he was in his 30s. Moore denies the charges.
Trump on Monday announced that he would not campaign for the embattled nominee, who is facing a close contest via recent polling in the red state of Alabama.
The president, however, used Twitter on Sunday to slam Moore’s opponent, Democratic challenger Doug Jones.
“The last thing we need in Alabama and the U.S. Senate is a Schumer/Pelosi puppet who is WEAK on Crime, WEAK on the Border, Bad for our Military and our great Vets, Bad for our 2nd Amendment, AND WANTS TO RAISES TAXES TO THE SKY,” Trump tweeted. “Jones would be a disaster!”
