AOC urges Dan Crenshaw to back off Ilhan Omar, focus on ‘right-wing’ extremism

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended fellow freshman Democrat Ilhan Omar after she was criticized by a prominent Republican for her controversial remarks on the 9/11 attacks.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, blasted Omar, D-Minn., after she referred to the 9/11 hijackers as “some people who did something.”

“You refuse to cosponsor the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund, yet have the audacity to drum resentment towards Ilhan w/completely out-of-context quotes,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote to Crenshaw on Twitter. “In 2018, right-wing extremists were behind almost ALL US domestic terrorist killings. Why don’t you go do something about that?”

Crenshaw’s response Wednesday was prompted by Omar’s tweet earlier in the day in which she accused Crenshaw of using the type of rhetoric against her that has prompted threats. Authorities charged a New York man last week with threatening to assassinate Omar.

The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, which is set to expire next year, was created by Congress after the Sept. 11 attacks to provide financial support to families of those affected by the tragedy in exchange for their commitment not to sue the airlines involved.
