Geena Davis talks women’s rights

The former “Commander in Chief” was back in Washington on Thursday.Academy Award-winning actress and longtime advocate of women’s rights Geena Davis, whose last television role was playing the country’s first female president, was on the Hill on Thursday to testify at a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law hearing on women’s rights. The hearing focused on whether to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

As Democrat Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin was introducing Davis, he raised concern about whether he should refer to her as an actor or actress, and appropriately had a “gender discussion” about how to address her.

Davis explained in a side gender discussion that the dictionary definition of actor is a person who acts.

“So, we don’t actually need actress. It’s going to sound soon as quaint as doctoress … poetess,” she said.

“Or senatoress,” Durbin replied.
