Kevin McCarthy offers signed Trump State of the Union speech to replace torn Pelosi copy

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy offered his copy of President Trump’s signed State of the Union address to replace the one House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore.

“He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech,” Pelosi told House Democrats Wednesday, according to Politico. “What we heard last night was a disgrace.”

The California Republican described stories presented in Trump’s State of the Union address, including the 100-year-old Tuskegee Airman, retired Brig. Gen. Charles McGee, McGee’s great-grandson, who “dreams of going to space,” and “a single mother Stephanie Davis and her lovely fourth grade daughter Janiyah, who received an Opportunity Scholarship.”

“Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi was unmoved and chose to tear up the House’s copy of that speech. She had no right to destroy this document, especially one filled with such impactful stories of American patriots. That record was presented before the people’s House, and it belongs to the American people,” McCarthy said on the floor of the House early Wednesday night, 30 minutes after the president was acquitted of both articles of impeachment in the Senate.

McCarthy said his signed copy of Trump’s State of the Union speech will be delivered to the House clerk’s office to be archived and preserved for posterity.

“Whether she likes it or not, these great American stories will be remembered by history, not erased by the speaker,” he said.

Following Trump’s acquittal on both articles, McCarthy released a video of him tearing paper and declaring the president is “acquitted for life.”
