Redskins DE Jenkins tears ACL, out for season

Redskins rookie defensive end Jarvis Jenkins tweeted this morning that he had torn his right ACL, ending his season.

Jenkins tweeted, “Unfortunately it is an ACL tear…I’m gonna work harder than I’ve ever worked to get back I love this game too much.”

Jenkins’ agent, Joseph Flanagan, confirmed that his client was out for the season.

“He’s frustrated in the sense that he wanted to contribute, he was having fun and doing well and getting better,” Flanagan said. “He’s disappointed, but he’s determined to get back…. It could be a lot worse.”

Jenkins will undergo surgery; the recovery process is six to eight months.

Jenkins injured his knee in the first quarter of Washington’s 34-31 loss to Baltimore Thursday night. He needed help walking off the field, but was encouraged later that he could walk to the locker room on his own. However, that’s not unusual for players with such injuries.

“I was shuffling down the line and tried to plant and throw my guy down and I heard a pop,” Jenkins said after the game.

Jenkins’ loss is a major blow to an improved Redskins defensive front. He started the last two preseason games in place of the injured Adam Carriker. Jenkins was slated to be the third end, which means he would have played a lot, and was a part of their nickel package. He showed a quick first step as a pass rusher and power vs. the run, even with inconsistent technique.

Kedric Golston, a starter in 2010, likely will be the third end. Darrion Scott and Doug Worthington both have played well vs. backups in the preseason.
