QB matchups in Super Bowl

Tom Brady vs. Eli Manning was a nice quarterback matchup Sunday. How did it measure up to the most intriguing Super Bowl duels? 5. Bart Starr vs. Len Dawson (I) » The game was a dud, but when they met in the first Super Bowl, the 33-year-old Starr (105.0) and 31-year-old Dawson (101.7) were the first QBs to exceed a passer rating of 100 in the same season.

4. Joe Montana vs. Dan Marino (XIX) » Marino (108.9) and Montana (102.9) were top two rated passers in the NFL in 1984, and their teams were No. 1 seeds. Marino threw a record 48 touchdown passes that year to win the league MVP award, but Montana captured the Super Bowl MVP in the 49ers’ 38-16 win.

3. Terry Bradshaw vs. Roger Staubach (XIII) » This game remains the only Super Bowl in history in which the quarterbacks entered with two Super Bowl championships on their resume. And the game lived up to it, a 35-31 Steelers win.

2. Drew Brees vs. Peyton Manning (XLIV) » Brees was player of the year and Manning the MVP, and their respective teams entered at 15-3 and 16-2 after being seeded first in the playoffs. Brees got the Super Bowl MVP in the Saints’ 32-29 win.

1. John Elway vs. Brett Favre (XXXII) » It was a great matchup between Favre, the 28-year-old, reigning Super Bowl champ, and the 37-year-old Elway, who had been winless in three previous trips. In storybook fashion, Elway won 31-24 with lots of help from MVP Terrell Davis.
