Justice Brett Kavanaugh has dethroned Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the most well-known justice on the Supreme Court.
Kavanaugh, a conservative who was sworn in last year after a contentious confirming hearing, had 83% name recognition, according to a Marquette University Law School poll.
Seventy-nine percent of those polled had heard of Ginsburg, a liberal darling. In comparison, two-thirds could identify Chief Justice John Roberts.
Kavanaugh’s name recognition comes with a high unfavorable rating, as 32% of respondents view him in a negative light. Kavanaugh’s unfavorable rating is the highest among the nine justices.
Justice Clarence Thomas, who also faced sexual misconduct allegations during his confirmation hearing nearly three decades ago, was viewed more negatively than most of his colleagues, with a 23% unfavorable rating.
Ginsburg was next in line with a 17% unfavorable rating, though she bested her colleagues by double digits with 41% of those polled having a favorable impression of the 86-year-old.
The poll, conducted Sept. 3-13, surveyed 1,423 adults nationwide and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
