Spring break, Easter, Passover and the forecast for a beautiful weather will make this one of the most traveled weekends of the year, according to traffic watchers.
AAA has never done an official travel study for this holiday weekend, but the roads should be crowded with the confluence of events, even as gas prices near the $3 mark, said John Townsend II, of AAA Mid-Atlantic.
“‘his is the perfect weekend for family time,” Townsend said.
State police in Virginia and Maryland say they will have all available officers on the roads this weekend.
Amtrak service between the Northeast and Florida resumed Friday after a bridge near Selma, N.C., that failed a routine inspection was repaired, said spokesman Cliff Black.
Air Transport Association spokesman David Castelveter said the industry doesn’t track the number of travelers for this holiday because its date changes each year, but carriers are expecting a high volume of passengers over a short period.
“That means airports will be crowded, airplanes will be full,” Castelveter said. “It’ll be busy, busy.”
Washington airports saw an increase in traffic earlier in week, due mainly to schools letting out for spring break, but things were calm Friday, said Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokeswoman Courtney Prebich. Travel will pick up Sunday and Monday as passengers return from vacations, she said.
Amtrak service is heavily booked but spaces are available, Black said.
