Assistant principals ready for Annapolis High

Four new assistant principals will take their posts at Annapolis High Schoolnext Thursday, the latest in a series of changes for the school.

The move is part of Superintendent Kevin Maxwell?s plan to restructure the school, which has not made Adequate Yearly Progress goals set by the federal government for the past four years.

As part of the restructuring, Maxwell is requiring all of the school?s employees, from teachers to janitors, to reapply for their jobs if they want to return there next year.

The assistant principals are the only people at the school who will start their new jobs during the current school year.

The rest of the employees will start during the beginning of the next school year.

Maxwell proposed the appointments, and the Board of Education approved them during Wednesday?s meeting.

“The superintendent wanted to make the appointments now in order to have the staff become acclimated with the school and prepare for the transition,” said Tony Ruffin, a school system spokesman.

“It?s pretty shocking. People have really liked the administration and connected with some of them,” said Jacob Isbell, a junior at Annapolis High School. “It?s weird getting new people you don?t know at all to help you with your problems.”

The new assistant principals are all from other Anne Arundel County schools. They include:

» Sheila Hill, an assistant principal at Old Mill High School

» Eugene Whiting, an assistant principal at Arundel Middle School

» Merlene Clark, an assistant principal at Arundel High School

» Mary Lappe, who works for the Board of Education and is a former assistant principal at Old Mill High School
