Passenger killed when SUV catches fire in Queens

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say a 50-year-old passenger riding in the backseat of an SUV was killed when the vehicle caught fire in Queens.

It happened on the eastbound lane of the Grand Central Parkway just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say the SUV struck a piece of metal which ruptured the gas tank causing the vehicle to catch fire.

The 26-year-old driver and a 25-year-old passenger managed to escape the burning vehicle. Both were taken to New York Hospital Queens in stable condition.

Police have not yet released the victim’s identity.
