‘Best guy for the job’

It was Wednesday afternoon so it was Rex Grossman‘s turn. We’d already heard from John Beck — a few times in fact. And earlier Wednesday morning Donovan McNabb spoke at an event and reiterated a stance to reporters that no one believes: “I want to stay in D.C.” OK, maybe he wants to stay here, but to play? That’s a different story.

Which brings us to Grossman. Since every Redskins quarterback has something to say these days, why not turn to Grossman?

Yes, he too thinks he should be the starter. He’s also a free agent, though he said he plans to re-sign based on conversations he had with coaches before the lockout.

“I’m the best guy for the job,” candidate Grossman told ESPN 980 on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of things you cannot learn just looking at a playbook.”

Hmmm. Who could he be talking about?

Of course, any player in a competition — as these quarterbacks will be — who doesn’t think they should be the starter should start looking for a new profession. That’s why we don’t get the furor raised over Beck saying the same thing to 106.7 “The Fan” on Tuesday. Or Sirius Radio earlier. Or several reporters in April.

“You won’t be perceived as the starter unless you say it, I guess,” Grossman said. “If [Beck] doesn’t say it, no one else is going to say it. I know the coaches appreciate his hard work and think he’s talented and not quite sure what he can do. This is the time of year when you prove or don’t prove you can do those things. So he’s not benefitting from the lockout at all.”

For the record, Grossman said he doesn’t know if McNabb refused to wear the wristband, but he did say McNabb told him he didn’t like to wear one. He also said it got tense near season’s end because of McNabb’s relationship with the Shanahans.

“I think he’s ready to move on,” Grossman said, “and they are too.”
