Georgetown’s schedule is ship-shaping up

The U.S.Navy better make sure it doesn’t run out of ships. With Georgetown announcing that it will start the 2012-13 season Nov. 9 against Florida onboard a ship docked at Naval Station Mayport outside of Jacksonville, Fla., three different floating vessels are set to be venues for college basketball’s opening night.

Last year it was only the Carrier Classic between North Carolina and Michigan State, which took place on board the USS Carl Vinson docked in San Diego. This season Syracuse and San Diego State will play on the flight deck of the retired USS Midway, which is stationed in San Diego, and Marquette and Ohio State will meet on a ship docked in Charleston, S.C.

The ship for the game, named the Navy-Marine Corps Challenge, has not been determined because of the uncertain nature of military schedules.

Georgetown’s full schedule has not been released, but the Hoyas also host Tennessee in the SEC-Big East Challenge on Nov. 30 and face Texas on Dec. 4 in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
